Chacma Baboon (Papio ursinus) - 1/4 buqsha
The primates featured on the stamp are Hamadryas Baboons (Papio hamadryas), native to the rocky highlands and arid mountain cliffs of Yemen and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula. While older taxonomic classifications occasionally grouped all baboons under a single broad species category or mistagged regional issues, true Chacma Baboons (Papio ursinus) are endemic exclusively to Southern Africa (such as the Cape and Zambezi regions) and do not occur in Yemen. The stamp accurately depicts the distinct social behavior and habitat of the Hamadryas species found in the region. The vignette captures two baboons engaged in mutual social grooming along a rocky outcrop—a crucial bonding ritual within their complex multi-level troops. The scene highlights Yemen's native highland fauna, where troops take refuge on steep cliff faces to avoid predators and establish roosts.
