Issued in the 1960s, this stamp commemorates Scott Carpenter (1925-2013), one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts of the United States space program. Carpenter became the second American to orbit the Earth when he piloted the Mercury-Atlas 7 mission aboard the spacecraft Aurora 7 on 24 May 1962, completing three orbits and contributing valuable scientific and operational data during the early years of human spaceflight.
