The Vostok 1 mission, launched on April 12, 1961, marked a pivotal milestone in human history when Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin completed a single orbit around Earth, becoming the first human in space. To celebrate the early achievements of human spaceflight, the postal administration of the Yemen Arab Republic (الجمهورية العربية اليمنية) issued a commemorative airmail series in 1963 entitled "Honouring Astronauts" (تكريماً لرجال الفضاء).
