This stamp was originally issued in 1960 by the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen (المملكة المتوكلية اليمنية) to mark the 15th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations (1945–1960). In November 1962, it was released with a black overprint updating the dates to 1945–1962 to commemorate the 17th Anniversary of the United Nations.
The central design features the official United Nations emblem enclosed within a chain, symbolizing global unity and international law. The 1962 overprint includes four horizontal bar strikes obscuring the original "1945–1960" dates on both sides, with the updated years "1945–1962" printed in Western numerals along the bottom and Arabic numerals across the top. Yemen had joined the United Nations in September 1947, and issuing overprinted commemorative stamps allowed the postal administration to mark key international anniversaries efficiently during a turbulent period in the country's domestic political history.
